CIAC welcomes consultation on chemicals management post-2020

OTTAWA, Oct. 6, 2017 /CNW/ - The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) welcomes the Minister of the Environment & Climate Change's response to the Healthy Environment, Healthy Canadians, Healthy Economy: Strengthening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) report tabled by the House of Commons Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development. In her response, the Minister proposes a formal, multi-stakeholder consultation process to determine Canada's approach to chemicals management post-2020.

"CIAC strongly supports the Minister's approach to take the appropriate time to consult and engage with all affected stakeholders and to ensure the implications of any changes to Canada's chemical management process are well understood," said Bob Masterson, CIAC President and CEO. "We also welcome the Minister's sustained public commitment to ensuring a science and risk-based foundation for the continued implementation of CEPA and Canada's Chemicals Management Plan (CMP)."

Canada continues to be a recognized world-leader in chemicals management and remains on track to complete the scientific risk assessment and risk management process for over 23,000 chemical substances by 2020.

CIAC and its member-companies have been and remain fully engaged and productive partners in the development and delivery of CEPA 1999 and in protecting the public and environment from harm from chemical substances.

The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) is the voice of Canada's $53 billion chemistry industry and represents more than 50 members and partners across the country. Members of CIAC are signatories to Responsible Care® ? the Association's U.N.-recognized sustainability initiative.
