Statement by the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development on the Social Security Tribunal Review

GATINEAU, QC, Oct. 26, 2017 /CNW/ - "In March 2017, I announced that the Social Security Tribunal would undergo a review to ensure it remains relevant in meeting the needs and expectations of Canadians. Commissioning this review was in response to a series of reports that found the appeals process took far too long for Canadians to be confirmed for benefit eligibility.

This exercise provided an opportunity to review the appeals process and to identify improvements to make outcomes simpler, more predictable, transparent and timely for Canadians. It involved public consultations through interviews with key stakeholders, online surveys, written submissions as well as focus groups in locations across Canada. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who participated.

The Government is committed to making the appeals process more efficient and responsive to the needs of Canadians. We heard from parliamentarians, from stakeholders and, more generally, from Canadians that wait times have been too long for the appeals process and this needs to be addressed. We intend to take steps to provide Canadians with the client-centric appeals system they rightly expect.

I am pleased to receive the Social Security Tribunal Review final report. I will carefully review the report over the coming weeks."
