NASA Employee Olumide Onanuga Named Ashford University's Outstanding Alum of the Month

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Olumide Onanuga has been named Ashford University's Outstanding Alum of the Month for November 2017. The Ashford University Outstanding Alum of the Month recognition highlights Ashford success stories and graduates who have used their Ashford education as a springboard to personal and professional achievement.

Once Onanuga retired from the Marine Corps and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Ashford, he landed a position as a Compliance Officer with the U.S. Treasury. But he wanted to take his education further, so he decided to also pursue his Master of Public Administration with Ashford.

Toward the end of his career with the Marine Corps, Onanuga realized he wanted more than just a high school diploma as he prepared to enter the civilian workforce. After finding that a traditional brick-and-mortar university did not work with his frequent deployments, Onanuga decided to enroll with Ashford to take advantage of the flexibility of an online classroom.

"I received my undergraduate degree so I knew I could take care of my family," he says. "When I received my master's degree, I did that for myself because I knew I still had the fire inside me to take it a little bit further."

A year into his master's program, Onanuga accepted a position at NASA as a Human Resources Developmental Specialist. Part of his job includes recruiting and hiring astronauts. He successfully completed his master's degree while working for NASA.

"Reaching the finish line when it came to my education made my day because education only goes as far as you take it," he says.
