CIP 150 investment brings new energy to Kugluktuk - $300,000 investment to increase solar power capability in northern community

KUGLUKTUK, NU, Dec. 21, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Increasing the use of clean energy is a key component of the Government of Canada's approach to promoting sustainable economic growth and reducing reliance on diesel. That is why the government is investing in an expansion of the Hamlet of Kugluktuk's solar power array.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor).

The Hamlet of Kugluktuk is increasing the size of its rooftop solar panel array on its recreational complex to reduce its dependency on diesel generated power. The upgrade has the potential to offset 70,000 litres of diesel per year and more than two million litres over the lifetime of the panels. This will result in significant financial savings for the Hamlet and a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

These investments are a part of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, a $300-million fund established to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday through investments in community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $12.8 million is being invested across the three territories.
