Fortune again names Crowe Horwath a best workplace for giving back

CHICAGO, Feb. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- As Hurricane Harvey began to slow down on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, Brian Carey and his wife gathered clothes, blankets, pillows, toiletries and pet kennels to take to the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston where around 10,000 evacuees were being sheltered. After arriving, they made the decision to stay and volunteer, spending the next six hours handing out meals, coordinating volunteer efforts, and talking with evacuees ? many of whom had lost just about everything they owned. Carey and his wife have continued to support their neighbors as the community rebuilds.

Carey is a senior manager in tax services at Crowe Horwath LLP, one of the largest public accounting, consulting and technology firms in the U.S., and it's because of many people like him that Crowe was named one of Fortune's Best Workplaces for Giving Back. The list is based on feedback from more than 380,000 employees at Great Place to Work-Certified organizations.

In addition to supporting its people's hands-on involvement by encouraging volunteer work and providing paid time off for volunteering, Crowe's overall charitable giving aligns contributions with the volunteer efforts of its people.

"Unlike most company foundations in which nonprofits submit grant requests, the Crowe Horwath Foundation only accepts grant requests from our people on behalf of a nonprofit," said Stuart Miller, Crowe partner and Crowe Horwath Foundation trustee chair. "Our foundation's giving is based on directly supporting the philanthropic passions of our people."

Crowe continues to organize emergency relief donations and match gifts made by personnel in response to natural disasters and tragic events. In 2017, Crowe and its personnel donated nearly $250,000 to the American Red Cross to help the people affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria and the California wildfires.

"Crowe personnel displayed consistent support to help people affected by an unprecedented string of disasters this year, each time going above and beyond what is typical in these situations," said Susan Westerfield, American Red Cross regional philanthropy officer.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Crowe CEO Jim Powers challenged personnel to volunteer 75,000 hours in the communities where they live and work. The firm and its personnel are on track to meet that goal through a variety of activities. Additionally, in the past year, Crowe supported more than 400 nonprofit organizations locally and nationwide through charitable contributions, including:

According to Fortune and Great Place to Work, the companies on the Best Workplaces for Giving Back list were selected based on employees' assessment of how proud they are of their impact on the community, the difference they feel they make and whether their work has special meaning. When selecting the organizations on the list, Great Place to Work considered paid time off for volunteering and the extent to which the organizations contribute to community and charitable causes through corporate donations and employee fund-matching programs. Crowe people support the firm's core values by serving and supporting their communities.
