More British Columbians Considering Civil Disobedience to Stop Kinder Morgan Pipeline Construction

• 12% of population willing to engage in civil disobedience to stop pipeline
• Sentiments spread across political affiliation, age, income, gender, and region

BURNABY, BC, April 27, 2018 /CNW/ - A new Insights West opinion poll indicates 12 per cent of British Columbians are now willing to engage in civil disobedience to stop Kinder Morgan from building its new pipeline to export bitumen through the province. This percentage has increased from seven per cent in November 2017, to 10 per cent in February 2018, and to 12 per cent in April 2018.

The April polling also provides a profile of the type of people willing to engage in civil disobedience to delay or stop the pipeline. Men and women are equally likely to consider engaging in civil disobedience with these intentions equally spread across age and income groups as well as provincial region.

"More and more British Columbians are willing to engage in civil disobedience to stop Justin Trudeau's efforts to push his pipeline through B.C. as evidenced by these poll results and the mounting number of arrests," states Kennedy Stewart, Member of Parliament for Burnaby South, who commissioned the poll. "People from all walks of life are standing up to oppose this project which clearly lacks the social licence needed to proceed."

Of those who voted for the federal New Democratic Party in the October 2015 federal election, 24 per cent would consider engaging in civil disobedience; followed by 15 per cent who voted for parties other than federal NDP, Liberal, or Conservative; 11 per cent of Liberal voters; and two per cent of Conservative voters.

"This polling data counters the idea that pipeline opposition is confined to a radical group. The results show that intentions to block the pipeline extend equally to men and women, young and old, rich and poor, and across all regions of the province," says Stewart. "While federal New Democratic Party supporters appear to be most willing to put their bodies on the line, a significant proportion of Green and Liberal Party supporters also show a willingness to do so."
