National Popular Vote Bill Passed by the Connecticut Senate Compact will take Effect when Passed by States with 98 more Electoral Votes
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Connecticut Senate, in a bipartisan manner, passed the National Popular Vote bill. This bipartisan vote followed House authorization of the bill ? which occurred on the same day President Trump said, "I would rather have a popular election" ? sending the legislation to the Governor's desk for consideration and signature. Connecticut is expected to become the 12th jurisdiction to pass the National Popular Vote bill, bringing the total number of electoral votes in the agreement to 172. States with 98 more electoral votes are required to reach the 270 electoral votes required for the agreement to take effect.

The National Popular Vote interstate compact would not take effect until enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes ? that is, enough to elect a President (270 of 538). Under the compact, the winner would be the candidate who received the most popular votes from all 50 states (and the District of Columbia) on Election Day.
