New supportive housing facility officially opens in St. John's

ST. JOHN'S, Sept. 14, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador and the John Howard Society of Newfoundland celebrated the grand opening of Garrison Place. The new 10-unit facility provides supported housing for vulnerable individuals experiencing, or most at risk of homelessness.

Mr. Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John's East, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, attended the official opening today.

Quick facts:

• The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador contributed $1,250,000 in funding. The funding was through the federal-provincial Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) Agreement.
• Garrison Place consists of 10 bachelor units managed by the John Howard Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
• The project also received $232,475 from the Government of Canada's Homelessness Partnering Strategy
• The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Homelessness Fund provided $100 000 in funding for the development of services and programming at the John Howard Society.
• The Government of Canada recently unveiled its National Housing Strategy - a 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need.
