Hero FDNY Captain (Ret.) Frank Jacoby Passed in His Sleep on December 16th 2018

BAYSIDE, N.Y., Dec. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hero FDNY Captain (Ret.) Frank Jacoby, passed in his sleep on December 16th 2018 at about 5:00 AM. He was 91 years old.

People talk about heroes, usually figuratively or metaphorically. Frank Jacoby was literally a real life hero, awarded the FDNY's highest honors for savings lives, putting the welfare of others ahead of his own. This definition of heroism is also one of the definitions of love.

Case in point: fire at 365 Cypress Ave in the Bronx on 11 Mar 1969. Lieutenant Frank Jacoby and Engine Company 83 were first on the scene. When told that children were trapped in the building, he immediately began a crawling search. He found 6 year old Hector Reyes unconscious, picked him up and carried Hector out. Without hesitation, Dad rushed back into the fire and black smoke and continued his search. He found 2 year old Daniel Reyes, burned and unconscious. Dad's helmet was knocked from his head and he lost his flashlight in the falling plaster and burning brands. He got as far as the public hallway and collapsed. He and the child were then assisted to the street by other firemen. His fast action with complete disregard for his own safety saved the lives of 2 children.

Frank Jacoby was given the Thomas A Kenny Memorial Medal at a ceremony in front of City Hall by the Mayor for this. There were many more acts of bravery in his career.

Frank Jacoby was born in 1927. His father was a hard working carpenter. Frank played football in High School. When he turned 18 on 14 Apr 1945, he enlisted to help fight in World War II.

When Frank Jacoby left for the service, his father gave him 3 rules: (1) don't get arrested, (2) don't get tattooed, (3) don't get married. If you do any of those 3 things, don't come home.

Frank Jacoby didn't do those 3 things, came home and dated his High School sweetheart, Barbara Ermann, and they were married on 24 June 1950.

Frank worked as a draftsman and a toy salesman but he found his career in the NYC Fire Dept. He was a Fireman then a Lieutenant then a Captain.

Barbara and Frank Jacoby contributed to the Catholic Church all of their lives. Frank Jacoby had a crisis of faith after tragically losing 3 of his 6 children but came around to the solace of his religion and spent his last years in Bayside at the Ozanam Hall of Queens Nursing Home.

The most important items in Frank Jacoby's life were his family, his Catholic faith and his career in the NYC Fire Dept.

There will be an FDNY honor guard and a military flag and taps ceremony graveside.
