Supporting the Vitality of Linguistic Minority Communities in Prescott-Russell

The Government of Canada supports official languages organizations in Prescott-Russell

HAWKESBURY, ON, Jan. 23, 2019 /CNW/ - Over the generations, Canadians have ensured their official languages and cultures thrive. Our two official languages are at the heart of our identity and our values. Ensuring their vitality is essential and depends on strong, vibrant communities across the country.

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, was in Hawkesbury to announce more than $864,000 in funding for eight organizations in Prescott-Russell:

Local organizations are at the heart of communities' efforts to preserve and promote minority language culture and heritage. This investment will help ensure the vitality of Eastern Ontario's official-language minority communities by supporting the organizations' core programming.

The multi-year investment, made through Canadian Heritage's official languages funding programs, includes 20 per cent in core funding, as announced in the Action Plan for Official Languages 2018?2023: Investing in Our Future.

Quick Facts

The Action Plan for Official Languages proposes additional funding of $499.2 million in addition to current investments of $2.2 billion, which will bring the Government of Canada's total support to almost $2.7 billion over five years.

In 2018, core funding for official-language community organizations was increased by 20 per cent for the duration of the action plan. This support will strengthen nearly 300 organizations across Canada.

There are official-language minority communities in every province and territory, each with its own specific realities and needs.
