Architecture Design Collaborative Breaks Ground On Orange County's Largest Housing Development Exclusively For Veterans

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., Feb. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The ceremonial groundbreaking on the 1.5-acre lot which marked the start of Architecture Design Collaborative's partnership with Jamboree Housing Corporation in the construction of Santa Ana Veteran's Village, the developer's first dedicated property for veterans, was held on Monday, Jan. 7. The three-story Spanish Revival-style apartment complex will provide 75 subsidized housing units for formerly homeless vets.

"A large percentage of the future tenants will have been without a permanent home for many years, so it was our goal that the design of the building would help facilitate a sense of community, permanence, and security," said Chris Weimholt, Principal with ADC.

"We determined a courtyard style building would be the best choice. It provides the residents with an opportunity for indoor / outdoor flexible type spaces which is great for larger groups while taking advantage of their SoCal weather. The large courtyard will have many different active and passive type spaces such as a community garden, outdoor gaming area, BBQ - soft seating areas, and multiple self-reflection areas that are quieter and more intimate in nature all while being in a secure and controlled environment. We collaborated closely with George Searcy, Senior VP - Community Impact of Jamboree Housing Corporation and all of their amazing supportive service providers to make sure we had the right balance of supportive spaces while still maintaining a sense of privacy for the future residents and most importantly a sense of home."

Construction on the one- and two-bedroom unit apartment complex began this month and will take about a year to complete. Amenities including a club room and lounge area, pet spa, fitness center, counseling offices, multipurpose rooms, computer training center and a community kitchen are planned, as well as a 4,500 square foot community center with a veteran's services cooperative. ADC's team has designed the 3-story building to achieve LEED Gold certification and to comply with AWDA requirements.
