RCMP Corruption Investigation Successfully Leads to Guilty Verdict
OTTAWA, Feb. 27, 2019 /CNW/ - On January 11, 2019, Mr. Justice Robert J. Smith of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice found Mr. Robert Barra and Mr. Shailesh Govindia guilty of s. 3(1) of the Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act. It was alleged that Mr. Barra and Mr. Govindia had agreed to give a benefit to foreign public officials to ensure Cryptometrics Canada would obtain a contract with Air India.
Mr. Barra, an American citizen, was a co-Chief Executive Officer of Cryptometrics US while Mr. Govindia, a British citizen was the Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Markets Groups Holdings Ltd. and acting as an agent for Cryptometrics.
This outcome is the result of a complex criminal investigation referred to as Project "Affix" from the RCMP National Division's Sensitive and International Investigations Section. The trial was heard over the course of several weeks from January to October 2018. This is the third successful conviction obtained in relation to this investigation. Mr. Barra and Mr. Govindia will be sentenced at the Ottawa Court on March 7, 2019.
