Significant flooding in New Brunswick: IBC reminds consumers to be on alert


HALIFAX, April 24, 2019 /CNW/ - Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is encouraging residents affected by flooding in New Brunswick to call their insurance representatives if they have damage to report.

The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization, River Watch 2019 issued an advisory yesterday. Water levels in the southern parts of the province will continue to rise in the days ahead. Water levels in Fredericton and the northern regions are stabilizing, but are expected to remain above flood level for the rest of the week.

"We have seen the devastating effects that flooding can have on communities," said Amanda Dean, Vice-President, Atlantic, IBC. "Warming temperatures, melting snow and heavy rain add to the problem. IBC is emphasizing the need for everyone to be on alert and stay safe. We want to help make sure that New Brunswick residents are ready to deal with the potential damage."

Consumers may wish to check what types of water damage their insurance policy covers. Damage as a result of sewer backup may be covered by home insurance if the coverage was purchased as an add-on to the policy. Various amounts of sewer backup coverage are available. Check with your insurance representative to see if you have sewer backup coverage and, if so, how much coverage you purchased.

In recent years, overland flood insurance has become more readily available for homes across Atlantic Canada. Overland flooding typically occurs when bodies of water ? such as rivers, streams, lakes, dams and other watercourses ? overflow onto dry land and cause damage.
