Media Advisory - Toronto ceremony continues cross-Canada commemoration of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy



TORONTO, May 10, 2019 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong, City of Toronto, Veterans and honoured guests will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy with a departure ceremony as part of the commemorative journey across Canada. This spring, trains carrying combat boots? symbolic of the many Canadians who took a similar journey during the Second World War?are travelling across the country, from Vancouver to Halifax. The boots will arrive in Halifax on June 3 and will be part of the Government of Canada signature ceremony on June 6.

"On May 15, Veterans, their families, youth and the general public are invited to attend the event to commemorate D-Day and the Battle of Normandy at Union Station (West Wing) in Toronto at 18:30 ET."

As well as the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, 2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the end of Canada's Mission in Afghanistan, and the 75th anniversaries of the Battle of the Scheldt and the Italian Campaign during the Second World War.
