The Mission Continues Honors Veterans, Slated for Service Project and Fireside Chat in DC

WASHINGTON, Nov. 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- To honor their commitment to service and the 20th anniversary of 9/11, The Mission Continues launched Operation Enduring Service, a year-long campaign in which veterans will lead and support signature service efforts across the country. The next and final signature service project is slated ahead of Veterans Day on Saturday, November 6 in the Washington, D.C. area. A fireside chat featuring Denis McDonough, Secretary, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will also be held to explore and discuss the power of veterans to bring people together across divides and initiatives to prepare and support veterans as they face unique challenges of modern leadership.

Led by Army veteran David DuBois, D.C. Platoon Leader for The Mission Continues, veterans and volunteers will update a 9/11 memorial honoring two victims of Flight 77 with a new plaque, hold a wreath laying ceremony to honor those who have fallen, build benches, garden beds, and a pergola at the University of the District of Columbia Community College-Bertie Backus Campus community garden.

"On that day, my life was changed just like everyone else's across the United States and the globe," said DuBois. "It's my passion to help veterans, who I know have sacrificed greater than I did, that makes me want to continue to serve. I think about those folks who are still struggling with the outcome of 9/11, those soldiers who served and have now been injured. I am blessed that I'm here to be able to still serve and help other veterans."

In the two decades since 9/11, veterans have continued to step up and serve their country, creating connections and relationships that have deepened their sense of belonging and purpose through The Mission Continues. Throughout the year until Veteran's Day, veterans have deployed in support for more than 80 projects in communities all across the country.

"The Mission Continues is eager to recognize those who have put service above themselves since 9/11," said Mary Beth Bruggeman, President, The Mission Continues. "This is a natural and necessary continuation of service for our veterans, who are doing what they do best, by going where they are needed most: volunteering in communities, responding to natural disasters, and?throughout the COVID-19 pandemic?tackling food insecurity."

The Beyond 9/11: Operation Enduring Service campaign is made possible with support from the following partners: NFL- BWF Healthy Lifestyles and Creating Community grant, Raytheon Technologies, Starbucks, BAE Systems, Inc. and CarMax.
