Green Home Systems Shines Light on the Dangers of the NEM 3.0 Proposal for Californians

LOS ANGELES, March 14, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Green Home Systems, a leader in the American solar industry based in Southern California, has been vocal about their disdain toward the NEM 3.0 proposal, and they recently shared why they believe NEM 3.0 is not only a hindrance but also a danger for the solar industry and all Californians.

NEM 3.0 would drastically reduce the amount paid to solar owners for their extra solar power that they sell to utility companies to offset the raised cost of electricity to non solar owners. While the idea sounds fair in theory, the only winner out of this is the utility companies who are responsible for undependable power and have been linked to life-threatening disasters in California like wildfires and power major outages. Some utility companies even announced that they would shut off power at any time if they believe the threat of wildfire is high regardless of the weather or what their customers' needs are.

According to an article in PV Magazine written by Ryan Kennedy, Andy Sendy conducted a survey of 4,000 Californians actively shopping for solar systems. The results showed that 68.4% of those surveyed will no longer be interested in purchasing solar if the net metering changes are made.

The article goes on to state, "The proposal also calls for an $8 per kW grid participation charge, or as Sendy calls it "a tax on solar customers." This means each month a solar customer with a typical 8 kW system would pay $64 every month just to be connected to the grid.

The survey's results spell doom for the California residential solar industry: 95.4% of respondents said they would no longer buy solar under a decision that lowers payments and adds a grid access charge."

Green Home Systems Managing Director, Robbie Hebert, responded on behalf of GHS stating, "NEM 3.0 would be a major blow to not only the solar industry but also everything we stand for. With statistics like those given in Andy Sendy's survey, California solar could come to a stand-still which would halt our mission toward a green future. We've made so much progress over the years...it would be a shame to let the utility companies make all that progression obsolete."

We are all well-aware of the damage being done to our environment by fossil fuels and pollution produced by more traditional forms of energy, and if we don't continue down the path to a renewable energy future, we and our future generations will have to bear the catastrophic consequences.

Subsequently, NEM 3.0, while masquerading as a plan to help people financially, will actually hurt Californians pocketbooks. As solar becomes more and more researched and developed, it becomes cheaper and cheaper up-front. After the up-front cost, solar can save homeowners upwards of $20k over the course of the system's lifespan. So enacting a plan that greatly deters Californians from making the switch to clean, renewable solar power, it's also deterring them from the savings solar can provide.

The money that solar saves could go towards so many different avenues like a child's tuition fund or to help offset the drastic increase in gas prices we're seeing in California right now (which is another reason to not only switch to renewable energy for the home but to also invest in an electric vehicle that can be charged overnight by the solar power you have stored during the day).

"The bottom line is that California law-makers should be doing everything they can to push forward in the green energy movement, especially given that they have created so many solar mandates across the state that have already begun to take effect," states Hebert. "Solar is the best option that we know of that is not only extremely beneficial to the environment but also is cost-effective. We at Green Home Systems highly encourage all Californians to sign the petition at SaveCaliforniaSolar.com and to take a stand against NEM 3.0 and to keep solar affordable."
