Moogsoft State of Availability Report Reveals Engineering Teams are Double-Paying for Monitoring Without Increasing Availability

Moogsoft, the AIOps pioneer, today released findings from a survey of DevOps and engineering leaders in its inaugural State of Availability Report. The survey uncovers current engineering team practices, including the teams, tools and key performance indicators (KPIs) necessary for maintaining availability. Nearly 1,900 global respondents ? ranging from engineers and managers to IT directors and C-suite executives ? responded to the survey.

Organizations are scrambling to cut costs and operationalize. Many business leaders are tempted to invest in top technologies to drive efficiencies, but doing so comes at a significant hidden cost. Survey responses revealed that engineering teams are double-paying for monitoring, first with tools then with time ? leaving employees stuck in monitoring cycles and strapped with fewer resources to spend on automation. This prevents organizations from paying down technical debt or adopting scalable DevOps practices.

"With an average of 16 monitoring tools ? and up to 40 ? teams are overwhelmed with more data than they have time to process, which results in subpar outcomes and a lot of wasted time and money," said Richard Whitehead, evangelist in chief and CTO of Moogsoft. "We see that simplicity is the key to greater achievement. Organizations with fewer KPIs have a greater chance of meeting their SLAs because teams can focus on meeting customer expectations with more efficient tools, thus helping with faster incident detection and response."

Survey respondents indicated an overwhelming frustration with tool sprawl that only increased time required to manage, instead of helping them scale. Teams say they spend nearly twice as much time on monitoring than on any other task. Meanwhile, leaders think their teams' time is evenly split between tasks like incident response, development and cloud transformation.

The State of Availability Report also identifies a significant disconnect between an organization's DevOps adoption vs. the perceived level of adoption among leadership. When asked about DevOps adoption, less than 20% of respondents report that their organization has fully adopted DevOps philosophies, practices and tools. Meanwhile, anywhere between 25-55% of leaders believe teams have adopted advanced DevOps capabilities.

"Leaders and teams are eager to adopt more capabilities, but they lack the metrics to align their perspectives and gain insights to improve," said Phil Tee, CEO of Moogsoft. "While leaders believe teams are investing in the future, they're actually ensuring their tools are staying afloat. Leaders who are actually interested in innovating should build a DevOps culture where teams can share their work and find improvements that make investing in the future possible."
