A Foundation in Academia
In addition to many years of experience, Dr. Patil holds an extensive background in academia. He earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from P.M. Nadagouda Memorial Dental College and Hospital, a college affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore, in 2003. In 2009, he earned a Master of Science in dental surgery and oral and maxillofacial pathology from Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, a college and hospital located in Chennai, India.
Dr. Patil continued building upon his knowledge and expertise in the dental sciences through his studies. In 2019, he completed a doctorate in medical biotechnology from the University of Sienna, a public university located in Siena, Italy.
A Prolific Career in Research
Dr. Patil has dedicated more than 15 years to research in dental education and oral oncology. He worked as a senior lecturer for KLE Society's Institute of Dental Sciences in India from 2009 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he occupied the role of associate professor within the faculty of dental sciences at the MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences. He then held the position of associate professor at the College of Dentistry at Jazan University, a public university based in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, from 2016 to 2022
In 2022, Dr. Patil obtained his current position as a full professor at Roseman University of Health Sciences, a private university located in Henderson, Nevada, focused on health care education. In this position, he further contributes to the field by educating the next generation of dental clinicians.
Contributions to Dental Science
Dr. Patil's contributions to advancing dental science have been recognized through various awards and fellowships, including FRCPath, FDSRCPS, FICD, and FPFA. He has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists across all disciplines. He is additionally proud to have been inducted into the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society.
Dr. Patil's research contributions include being a contributor for Translational Research in Oral Oncology, a journal published by Sage Publications, and a collaborator for the NIH Grant for Use of Photodynamic Therapy on Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders. His work has accumulated over 19,000 citations in Google Scholar.
A Passionate Educator
In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Patil is a passionate educator and mentor. He occasionally incorporates game-based learning in his classrooms and is planning to develop a card-based gamification approach for dental education. He organizes research mentorship programs for students in his efforts to create an environment where they can engage with him and receive guidance in their research endeavors including the ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program (ADCFP). Many of his students have successfully advanced into residency programs within dentistry, which has given Dr. Patil great satisfaction and fulfillment. He is a fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute, Class of 2025.
Keys to Success in Research
Dr. Patil attributes his successful career to his foundation of determination, hard work, patience and perseverance. As a researcher, he emphasizes an approach that combines consistency with adaptation to new developments and technologies.For aspiring researchers, Dr. Patil believes that mental resilience is equally important, as it is common for grant applications and manuscripts to face multiple rejections. He advises that feedback should be taken as an opportunity for growth, and maintaining a strong mindset and commitment to goals is essential.
In the coming five to 10 years, Dr. Patil believes that artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) will have a substantial impact on various fields, including dentistry. He is currently leading an initiative to create a virtual-reality classroom for dental students and an AI- driven laboratory.
Dr. Patil is additionally concerned about the challenges posed by climate change. He has contributed a guest editorial to the Journal of the American Dental Association, discussing the implications of climate change on dental practices. He has also performed media outreach as an advocate for sustainability.
For his career aspirations, Dr. Patil remains committed to mentoring the next generation of dental clinicians. He aims to take on leadership roles in the future, with a long-term goal of serving as the dean for research and innovation and vice president of research and development for the university.
